Tricep Extension Machine
A guided extension movement using a seated machine, isolating the triceps with a controlled, stable path.
Adjust the seat and arm pads appropriately. Position your upper arms supported, forearms able to move through the machine's range.
Push the handles or pads down or forward. Extend your arms fully, depending on the machine's specific design. Squeeze at full extension. Peak contraction point of the exercise.
Control the return. Let the weight rise back to the starting position slowly.
Letting the upper arms move during the extension. Same isolation principle as other tricep exercises — keep the upper arms still.
Why it matters
Similar to a pushdown but with a fixed, guided path, this machine isolates the triceps with reduced technique demands compared to free-weight or cable variations, making it accessible for building initial tricep strength and muscle awareness.
How to do it
- Adjust the seat and arm pads appropriately. Position your upper arms supported, forearms able to move through the machine's range.
- Push the handles or pads down or forward. Extend your arms fully, depending on the machine's specific design.
- Squeeze at full extension. Peak contraction point of the exercise.
- Control the return. Let the weight rise back to the starting position slowly.
Common mistakes
- Letting the upper arms move during the extension. Same isolation principle as other tricep exercises — keep the upper arms still.
- Using momentum to push through the machine's resistance. A controlled, deliberate extension is more effective.
- Setting the seat or pads incorrectly. An improperly adjusted machine can reduce effectiveness or add unnecessary strain.
- Letting the weight drop quickly on the return. The lowering phase still builds muscle — control it.
