Rope Overhead Extension
An overhead tricep extension using a cable and rope attachment, combining the long-head stretch with constant cable tension.
Set the cable pulley to a low position. Face away from the machine, gripping a rope attachment with both hands behind your head.
Extend your arms overhead. Straighten your elbows, keeping your upper arms relatively still. Squeeze at full extension. Peak contraction point of the exercise.
Lower with control back to the stretched position. Resist the cable's pull rather than letting your elbows bend too quickly.
Letting the elbows flare out wide. Keep them relatively close to your head for proper tricep isolation.
Why it matters
This exercise combines the overhead position's deep stretch on the tricep's long head with a cable's constant tension throughout the range, offering benefits of both the free-weight overhead extension and standard cable pushdown in one movement.
How to do it
- Set the cable pulley to a low position. Face away from the machine, gripping a rope attachment with both hands behind your head.
- Extend your arms overhead. Straighten your elbows, keeping your upper arms relatively still.
- Squeeze at full extension. Peak contraction point of the exercise.
- Lower with control back to the stretched position. Resist the cable's pull rather than letting your elbows bend too quickly.
Common mistakes
- Letting the elbows flare out wide. Keep them relatively close to your head for proper tricep isolation.
- Using too much weight for a controlled stretch. This exercise depends on a controlled range of motion — heavy weight that limits that range reduces the benefit.
- Arching the back to manage the cable's pull. Keep your core braced and torso stable throughout.
- Rushing through the stretched bottom position. The deep stretch is part of what makes this exercise valuable — don't skip through it quickly.
