Cable Lateral Raise

A lateral raise performed with a cable instead of a dumbbell, providing constant tension throughout the movement.

Setup

Set the cable pulley to the lowest position. Stand sideways to the machine, gripping the handle with the arm farther from the machine.

Movement

Raise your arm out to the side. Lead with your elbow, lifting to roughly shoulder height. Pause briefly at the top. A short pause reinforces the contraction.

Return

Lower with control. Resist the cable's pull back down rather than letting it snap your arm back.

Common Mistake to Avoid

Using momentum to swing the arm up. Same caution as the dumbbell version — a controlled, strict motion is what makes this exercise effective.

Equipment Cable machine
Primary Muscles Shoulders (side deltoid)
Secondary Muscles Traps (stabilizing)

Why it matters

Unlike a dumbbell lateral raise, where resistance varies through the range of motion due to gravity, a cable provides consistent tension throughout, including at the bottom of the movement where a dumbbell version offers the least resistance. This makes it a useful variation for maintaining tension on the side deltoid through the entire rep.

How to do it

  1. Set the cable pulley to the lowest position. Stand sideways to the machine, gripping the handle with the arm farther from the machine.
  2. Raise your arm out to the side. Lead with your elbow, lifting to roughly shoulder height.
  3. Pause briefly at the top. A short pause reinforces the contraction.
  4. Lower with control. Resist the cable's pull back down rather than letting it snap your arm back.

Common mistakes

  • Using momentum to swing the arm up. Same caution as the dumbbell version — a controlled, strict motion is what makes this exercise effective.
  • Raising above shoulder height. Going higher recruits the traps more than the side deltoid.
  • Standing too close to the machine. Stepping back enough to create a meaningful cable angle maintains better tension throughout the range.
  • Using too much weight. Like the dumbbell version, this is a strict isolation movement best done with moderate weight and excellent form.

Sets & reps by level

Beginner

3 sets of 12–15 reps per arm with light weight.

Intermediate

3–4 sets of 10–12 reps per arm at a moderate weight.

Advanced

4 sets of 10–15 reps per arm, sometimes with a brief pause at the top of each rep.
